Our cultural tradition of making “New Year’s resolutions” shares some similarities to the Buddhist practice of setting a motivation before any practice, yet there are also important differences. Many of us found that our plans and goals for 2020 were completely upended by the COVID pandemic, and as the crisis drags into a second year, we’re left with practical questions about making plans and setting goals when our lives feel subject to so much uncertainty. In this conversation, we’ll talk about how the Buddhist practice of setting our motivation, and how it can help us define our aspirations and intentions for the year ahead in a way that helps build resilience in our turbulent times and adaptability to our ever-changing circumstances.
